"Caffé Trieste, Berkeley"

pastel 13" x 20" 2005

Berkeley was jazzed when we got our own branch of Caffé Trieste, at San Pablo and Dwight Way. Yay! This venerable institution had its start in North Beach, San Francisco, in 1956. It introduced cappuccino to San Francisco, the first real coffee house on the West Coast.

The Giotta family knows how to create a great ambiance. Excellent espresso, Opera, poetry and art are all abundant in their friendly and lively establishments. The walls are covered with photos of their musical history, celebrities and locals, as well as art (including this print and one by Anthony Holdsworth.) They have a Sausilito branch as well. Ours differs from the other two in the lack of tourists. The grand opening was such fun. I loved the free chocolate gelato. Meet you there for some coffee and pastry?
